Solar Energy to make Cincinnati Zoo as greenest zoo in America


Approximately 4 acres area in the Cincinnati zoo will be installed with solar panels canopy that will provide about 20 percent of electricity needs in the zoo park. The installations is expected to begin supplying electricity by April 2011.

Projects entrusted to green energy company Melink Corp., which based in nearby Clermont County. The project is estimated to cost up to $ 11 million and has begun installation of the first of 6,400 panels that will be installed.

Solar power installation is expected to cut park operating costs up to $ 150,000 worth of annual utility costs by providing about one-fifth the energy needs of the park. Melink corp. will also own and operate the 1.56-megawatt system. Melink Corp. will also act as the owner and the operate the system that is estimated to be producing around 1.56 MW of electricity.

Interactive kiosks will be provided for services to visitors who want to know about the solar power system works as well as the amount of energy production.

  1. An investment in panels unlikely to last anywhere near the payback period of 73.3. years is not green it is a waste.
